New Screening Guidelines for Heart Health in Children
All Children Should Be Screened For Potential Heart-Related Issues
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now recommends regular heart screenings for children, aiming to detect risks for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). These screenings should be done during well-child checks or pre-participation physical evaluations at least every three years, or when entering middle, junior, or high school.
Parents and healthcare providers must be vigilant in identifying warning signs and risk factors, understanding family history, and advocating for further tests like electrocardiograms or genetic testing when necessary. Additionally, CPR training and AED placement are highly encouraged to prevent tragic outcomes.
