Join PSI as an Interpreter and play a crucial role in enabling effective communication between non-English speaking students, their families, and school staff. This position is essential for breaking down language barriers in real-time during school meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and various educational activities, ensuring that all members of the school community can fully participate and be understood.

A Day in the Life:

  • Preparation and Coordination: Begin your day by coordinating with school staff to understand the day’s schedule and specific interpretation needs for various interactions and events.

  • Live Interpretation: Provide accurate and sensitive interpretation services during meetings, presentations, and classroom activities, facilitating clear and effective communication.

  • Document Assistance: Assist in the interpretation of written communications for students and parents, helping them understand school policies, homework assignments, and notices.

  • Cultural Mediation: Act as a cultural mediator when necessary, helping to explain cultural nuances and ensure that all parties understand the context of communications.

  • Feedback and Reporting: Provide feedback to school staff on potential language or cultural barriers encountered, suggesting improvements for future interactions.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpretation: Perform both simultaneous and consecutive interpretation during live events, maintaining a high level of accuracy and linguistic integrity.

  • Educational Support: Work closely with teachers and students in classroom settings to facilitate understanding and participation for non-English speakers.

  • Community Engagement: Enhance communication between the school and the wider community, ensuring that language barriers do not hinder involvement or access to information.

  • Documentation and Compliance: Assist in maintaining records of interpreted sessions and ensure compliance with confidentiality and ethical standards of practice.

  • Professional Development: Stay abreast of best practices in interpretation and participate in ongoing training to enhance skills and knowledge.

 

Requirements:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Communication, or a related field; certification in interpretation strongly preferred.

  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in English and at least one other language, with proven interpretation skills.

  • Experience: Prior experience in interpretation, ideally in educational settings or community services.

  • Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal abilities, and cultural sensitivity.

  • Professionalism: High ethical standards, with a commitment to confidentiality and accuracy in all communications.
