The average person spends about one-third of their life at work, so it’s no surprise that there is a strong correlation between workplace happiness and mental health. According to a recent study from HHS.gov, 76% of U.S. workers reported at least one symptom of a mental health condition, such as anxiety or depression. Furthermore, 84% of respondents said that workplace conditions had contributed to at least one mental health challenge.
Poor mental health can lead to reduced productivity, low self-confidence, absenteeism, and costly mistakes. Research has shown that a positive work environment plays a significant role in an employee’s overall well-being, including their mental health. Clear communication, supportive leadership, and a proper work-life balance are all essential factors in fostering workplace satisfaction and contentment. Equally important is the sense of inclusion and belonging that employees feel at work. Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are voluntary, employee-led groups that promote inclusivity within the workplace. ERGs are typically formed around a shared characteristic or identity, such as people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, or individuals with disabilities. Others, however, are based on shared interests, such as sports, music, or other hobbies. Regardless of their focus, ERGs offer support, access to resources, and help create a more diverse and inclusive company culture. They also provide a “safe space” that encourages employees to be their authentic selves at work.
Although ERGs are employee-driven, formal company support is essential to their success. Companies can assist ERGs by offering financial and executive sponsorship, professional development opportunities, recognition of ERG leaders, and policies that encourage participation. Organizations should also lead by example through their active participation and by offering other resources that might not be easily accessible to employees.
Creating a positive work environment may seem daunting, but the benefits far outweigh the effort. Not only does it improve employee well-being and company performance, but it is also the right thing to do. Reach out to your HR Manager to learn more about ERGs and explore additional ways to cultivate an environment of positivity and productivity.
